Key-Free Smart Lock with Z-Wave

When planning out a smart home strategy, you need to pick a communication protocol and stick with it in order to increase the chances of all your smart devices being able to be controlled from one (or at least only a few) places.

We went with the Z-Wave protocol in our properties because it works with the SmartThings hub and it's also widely available in generic lights, outlets, and electronics.

For a smart lock, we knew we wanted it to be linked with our smart home hub so that we could lock and unlock it from anywhere, and we also wanted to make sure we weren't having to deal with keys or with something that requires people to download an app (like the August lock, which we also love but use in other use cases when it's not the only way in).

Most smart locks from major lock manufacturers aren't the prettiest, but this one met the mark of being Z-Wave compatible (and therefore controllable from anywhere via our Wink app) and is pretty simple and modern looking.

We pair this lock (which works as a deadbolt) with this Kwikset passage lever.
